BACK TO BOLLYWOOD EXHIBITION

Back to Bollywood Exhibition 2

Foyer throughout the festival

In the East End of the 1970’s no less than four individual cinemas catered to the area’s burgeoning South Asian community. Screening films from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, audiences flocked to see favourite film stars and hear the latest musical soundtracks. Yet these spaces were so much more than simply movie-houses; hosting visiting VIPs and Bollywood actors, and becoming a base of action in the fight against racism cinemas like Brick Lane’s ‘Naz’ and Mile End’s ‘Liberty’ were sites of community belonging. Recalling this almost forgotten world this Heritage Lottery funded exhibition brings together rarely seen film posters, memories of original cinema-goers recently collected in oral history interviews, and photographic portraits.
